Health
The Southern Sudan was hit by pandemic tropical diseases such as malaria, tuberculosis
and acute lower respiratory and helminthic infections, kinetoplastid diseases, sexually
transmitted disease and recently by HIV/AIDS that reported to have increased swiftly
especially in Western Equatoria State where the Young Shepherds operates. Also there
is high rate of infant mortality, death at childbirth, and malnutrition of
children.

Agricultural Program
The Southern Sudan is a potential rich and fertile land in natural resources and
agricultural outputs. Rainfall is plenty since it lies within the tropical zone. Thus,
if improved, would make the Southern Sudan a world food basket. However, in the recent
years there has been persistent drought as a result of deforestation and desert encroachment
into the Southern Sudan regions due to convectional weapons used during the two decades
of civil war in Southern Sudan and the global warming. The civil war had a significant
impact on agriculture.

Churches
During the civil war in southern Sudan, churches have become the backbone of Sudanese
communities. Many Sudanese continue to participate in church activities that help in
bringing people together to counsel and help one another. This is especially important
since almost every family has lost someone in the civil war. Church activities help
people to find solace and hope. Although churches have been in constant peril
because of possible bombardments by the Sudan government, they consistently played
an effective role in giving the internal displaced persons (IDPs) protection,
shelter, food, clothes and moral support.
